If you’re getting ready for your baby’s first photoshoot, you might be wondering how to prepare for your newborn photography session. Don’t worry — I’m here to guide you every step of the way. With a little planning, your baby’s newborn session can be calm, relaxed, and full of those magical, tiny moments you’ll treasure forever.

1. Timing is Everything

Most newborn photographers, including me, recommend scheduling your session within the first two to three weeks after birth. This is when babies are naturally sleepy, making it easier to capture those classic curled-up poses and peaceful expressions.

If you haven’t booked yet, now’s the perfect time to get in touch. I take a limited number of newborn sessions each month in Boston, Lincolnshire, to ensure every family has a calm, flexible experience.

2. What to Bring

One of the biggest questions parents ask is: “Do I need to bring anything?” The short answer: not much! I provide a cosy, fully equipped home studio with blankets, wraps, outfits, and props.

That said, there are a few items you might like to include:

  • Sentimental items: a special blanket, a soft toy, or something meaningful for family shots

  • Extra clothes for baby and siblings: in case of little spills or accidents

  • Nappies and wipes: just in case, though I always have plenty on hand

Bringing these small items ensures your session flows smoothly, while still keeping it stress-free.

3. Dress Your Baby for Comfort and Style

Newborn photos look best when babies are cosy and comfortable. Soft, neutral colours work beautifully and create timeless images. Avoid bright patterns or logos that can distract from your baby’s natural beauty.

For parents: coordinating outfits in soft, muted tones helps create harmonious family shots. Remember, simple is often best — it keeps the focus on your baby and the connections you share.

4. Feed, Rest, and Relax

A well-fed, rested baby makes for a smoother session. Try to schedule your session around your baby’s usual nap and feeding times. Don’t worry if plans need to change — newborn sessions are always baby-led, and I’ll work around your little one’s rhythm to capture natural, peaceful moments.

Parents, this is your time too! Take a few deep breaths, relax, and enjoy watching your baby in their first professional photoshoot.

5. Leave the Stress Behind

The beauty of a newborn photography session is that it’s all about capturing your baby safely, naturally, and beautifully. You don’t need to worry about props, poses, or lighting — I take care of all of that.

All you need to do is show up, enjoy the experience, and treasure the memories we create together.
