Every newborn is different, and what works for one baby might not work for another and Im often asked how I keep a newborn settled during photoshoots. That’s why I approach every session with patience, flexibility, and a baby-led mindset. My goal is to keep your newborn calm and comfortable while capturing those fleeting, meaningful moments.

1. Observing Your Baby’s Cues
I spend time watching your baby and learning what makes them feel secure. Some respond well to gentle shushing or white noise, others prefer quiet and stillness. I adjust my approach based on what your baby needs in the moment.
2. Warm, Cozy Environment
Most babies feel calm when they’re snug. I ensure the room is warm, quiet, softly lit. I use soft blankets, and swaddle carefully when appropriate. Comfort is always my priority.
3. Feeding and Settling Breaks
I work around your baby’s feeding schedule. Some babies need a quick feed to settle, others just need a cuddle or a short nap. I allow breaks whenever your baby needs them, so there’s no pressure.
Swaddling and Comfort
Swaddling is a technique that gently wraps your baby in a soft wrap, which helps them feel secure and mimics the snug environment of the womb. Most babies respond really well to swaddling—many settle quickly, sleep longer, and feel more at ease during the session. I always monitor babies closely to ensure they are comfortable and safe while swaddled, and I adapt if a baby prefers to be free.
5. Gentle Handling and Positioning
Every movement is slow and deliberate. I support your baby’s head and neck at all times and adjust positioning to keep them comfortable and safe. If a baby fusses or moves unexpectedly, I pause and readjust gently.
6. Minimal Props, Maximum Comfort
Some babies relax better with swaddles, some without. Some like soft blankets, some prefer skin-to-skin. I adapt props and setups based on your baby’s preferences, keeping comfort the main focus.
7. Calm, Steady Energy
Babies are sensitive to the energy around them. I maintain a calm, patient, and reassuring presence, which helps both your baby and you feel relaxed during the session.
8. Capturing Natural Moments
I follow your baby’s rhythm rather than forcing poses. Whether your baby is awake, yawning, or fussing, I use those authentic moments to create meaningful, real images.
9. Flexible Session Length
No two babies are the same. Some need longer pauses or extra time to settle. I remain flexible with session length to ensure the experience is comfortable for everyone.
10. Experience You Can Trust
I’ve worked with so many newborns and have learned what tends to help babies relax. But I always adapt to each individual baby, respecting their unique needs and personality.
Your newborn is safe, comfortable, and the focus of the session. My approach ensures a relaxed, baby-led experience, capturing intimate, authentic moments you’ll treasure forever.

I photograph newborns in Boston, Lincolnshire and surrounding areas—if you’d like to talk about your baby’s session, I’m always happy to help.
