The first couple of weeks with a newborn are… well..intense. You’ve been warned about sleepless nights and endless feeding, but there’s a lot that people don’t really talk about.

Here’s the truth, from a mum of 14 year old twins and a 21 year old stepson and photographer who’s seen hundreds of these tiny humans and their parents:

1. Everything Feels Bigger Than It Is

Your baby is tiny, but the emotions are enormous. Every cry, every yawn, every feeding feels like a huge deal. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed.

2. Time Moves Weirdly

Somehow the days are both long and short. You’ll blink and realize the first week is gone, then another blink and they’re already changing before your eyes.

3. You Won’t Remember Every Moment

Sleep deprivation and sheer exhaustion make your memory fuzzy. Photos become the only way to remember how small and fragile they really were.

4. Feeding Can Take Forever (And That’s Okay)

Whether breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or both, expect lots of long sessions. Your baby isn’t late—they’re learning the world at their own pace.

5. Skin-to-Skin Is Magic

Not just a buzzword. Holding your baby close calms both of you. It’s okay to spend hours just staring at them, feeling them breathe.

6. You’ll Cry More Than You Think

Tears come from joy, exhaustion, and worry all at once. You don’t have to hide it—this is part of the ride.

7. You Won’t Need Fancy Props for Photos

Your baby doesn’t care about setups. All the tiny details—their little hands, yawns, the way they curl into you—are far more meaningful than any blanket or hat.

8. Silence Isn’t Always Golden

Sometimes the baby sleeps quietly. Other times, they scream their tiny heads off. Both moments are normal and worth photographing.

9. You’ll Forget How Tiny They Really Are

Even after a few days, babies change so quickly that you’ll underestimate how small they were. That’s why newborn photos are so valuable—they freeze this stage before it disappears.

10. Trust Yourself

You don’t need to do anything perfectly. Your baby doesn’t expect it. Just show up, breathe, and enjoy the little moments as they happen.
